Hospital Development (HD) or Hospital Services (HS) is a specialized role within the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO). This role is crucial to the implementation and refinement of the organ, eye, and tissue donation process in hospitals. A robust foundational knowledge of the historical and current regulatory framework and standards of practice of organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation, coupled with the soft skills to perform the role are crucial to the success of creating hospital ownership of the donation process and to help them reach their donation potential.

Current Instructors & Consultants

Having worked for two different OPOs in the HD/HS role, initially as a coordinator and eventually in management, coupled with her nursing credentials and experiences as a former ICU Educator, Hedi Aguiar brings a unique set of skills and insights which allow her to bridge the understanding of a hospital's needs with the OPO's needs. With Hedi's involvement on the national level through council and committee membership and chairmanship, as well as her experiences in teaching national HD/HS courses, Hedi brings a well-rounded and thorough perspective and experience to her offerings. Hedi's strengths lie in problem-solving, strategic planning, critical thinking, effective communication, and education.

Shanté Wells started in the OPO industry in 2005 in the HD role and then eventually in management, working with three different OPOs. She spent 16 years in the US Army Reserves as a Health Administration and Medical Logistics Officer. Shanté has spent over 20 years in planning, managing strategy and initiatives to increase performance improvement in diverse sectors of healthcare and hospitals. Shanté’s career and involvement on national committees and memberships brings experience and knowledge that she shares in teaching Hospital development.

Meghan joined the OPO industry in 2007 in a clinical role as a coordinator before transitioning to various leadership roles in hospital development, organ procurement, and transplant administration for a kidney and pancreas transplant program. Her experience has gained her invaluable knowledge in program and content development, process improvement, and developing teams alongside clinical care of the organ donor, allocation, organ donation conversations, procurement, administrator on-call, and hospital development. She now serves as a Consultant for Fundamental Roots and a Program Consultant for the Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance.
